Sowore Affirms Gov’t Plot to “Sacrifice” Nnamdi Kanu; Says History Repeating Itself
Abuja, Nigeria – October 18, 2025
Omoyele Sowore, activist and publisher, has accused the Proscribed Federal Government of Nigeria of attempting to “sacrifice” Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that the same machinery that once handled the MKO Abiola saga is being reused to silence the IPOB leader.
In a recent post on his social media platforms, Sowore drew a direct parallel between the treatment of the late MKO Abiola, whose prolonged detention and controversial death remain a wound in Nigeria’s political memory, and the current handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention.
Sowore wrote that the state has “weaponized the judiciary to buy time, to deceive the public, and to justify injustice,” and warned that the same “script” featuring “fake narrators, fake protesters, the same abuse of process” is now being used against Kanu.
“You kept saying, ‘Abiola’s case is in court’ using that as a shield for tyranny, until they eventually killed him a day before his ‘supposed’ release,” Sowore wrote. “History is repeating itself before our eyes. The Nnamdi Kanu I saw in court on October 16 is very ill; we must rescue him before another citizen is sacrificed to the blood-thirsty Nigerian elite club.”
Sowore’s charge comes amid renewed public concern about Kanu’s health and the protracted legal battles surrounding his illegal detention. Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been a symbol of the injustice prevalent in Nigeria’s recent political landscape, and his prolonged detention has drawn sustained attention from local and international actors.
The activist urged Nigerians, civil society and human rights organisations to expose what he described as a well-orchestrated manipulation of legal and political processes. Sowore described his intervention as a moral duty akin to past campaigns that fought for electoral justice and accountability.
There was no immediate response from the President, the Department of State Services (DSS) or other security agencies at the time of filing this report. Officials who have previously defended the handling of Kanu’s case despite blatant refusal to obey court rulings ordering the immediate release of Kanu.
Legal experts and rights groups say that serious allegations such as those made by Sowore require to be taken seriously and could be the end of Nigeria.
Ahead of the planned peaceful October 20 AsoRock protest, activist Omoyele Sowore has been moving across several communities in Abuja rallying Nigerians to join him in the streets to demand the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and an end to what he calls “state-engineered injustice.” His fiery town-hall engagements and impromptu street visits have sparked a wave of enthusiasm, with many citizens pledging to march alongside him.
Heavyweight politicians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe have thrown their weight behind the protest, a development that has reportedly left the Nigerian government “worried.” Security agencies have been placed on alert, but the growing coalition suggests that this peaceful protest may become one of the most significant public demonstrations since the EndSARS movement.
For now, Sowore’s post is likely to intensifies the debate surrounding Kanu’s illegal detention, revive memories of the Abiola era and sharpen calls for clearer, more accountable handling of high-profile cases.
Observers say the government has been deliberate in injustice, describing their action towards Nnamdi Kanu and the Biafran question as a total miscarriage of justice and a blatant disrespect of democracy.
