South African Traffic Police Officers Kills Nigerian Man In a Fatal Shooting

Klerksdorp, South Africa – December 19, 2025

Four South African traffic police officers have been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a Nigerian national during a traffic operation on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, North West Province.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of December 17, 2025, has sparked outrage and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement against foreigners.

The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Osinakachukwu Macus Onu, a Nigerian citizen who was reportedly legally residing in South Africa at the time of his death.

According to police statements and preliminary investigations, Onu was stopped by traffic police officers during a traffic operation at around 03:00.

He was allegedly chased by four traffic officers, and during the pursuit, they opened fire and killed him. His vehicle was later found stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the N12.

North West police confirmed that four traffic officers, aged between 25 and 36, were arrested by detectives in Klerksdorp. They face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice in connection with Onu’s death.

Their official firearms have been seized and will be subjected to forensic ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court. In a subsequent court appearance, all four officers were denied bail as the matter proceeds through the legal system.

North West Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, welcomed the swift action by detectives that led to the arrests and emphasized the importance of accountability within the police force.

The tragic killing has drawn attention to broader concerns about violence against foreign nationals and the conduct of law enforcement in South Africa.

The incident adds to a list of reported cases where Nigerian citizens in South Africa have died in violent circumstances, prompting calls from community groups and civic associations for stronger protections and justice for affected families.

The shooting incident comes at a time when police conduct and the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa remain sensitive issues.

With Nigerians and other immigrants forming part of the country’s diverse diaspora community, advocates are urging both South African and Nigerian authorities to ensure transparent investigations and prevent future tragedies.
