“Nigeria Has Happened To Sommie Maduagwu” Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor Laments

Abuja, Nigeria – September 30, 2025

Prominent IPOB Lawyer, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor has condemned in the strongest terms the tragic killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, describing it as “profoundly unsettling”. Saying it as a direct result of the Nigerian government’s failure to protect lives and property.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Ejiofor lamented that Sommie’s life was cruelly cut short by armed criminals in her home at Katampe, Abuja, on September 29, 2025.

Stressing that the incident, which occurred in the heart of Nigeria’s capital and seat of power, highlights the glaring collapse of the state’s responsibility to safeguard its citizens.

Ejiofor noted that Abuja, despite housing the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, and all security institutions, has now become a hotspot for unchecked criminal activity.

Recalling that he had recently warned about the worsening state of insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory, only for those fears to be confirmed in the most heartbreaking manner through Sommie’s death.

The lawyer also linked the government’s cancellation of this year’s Independence Day Parade to the same security failures, describing it as a shocking admission of weakness and collapse within the country’s security architecture.

He urged that Sommie’s death must not be treated as just another headline destined to fade into obscurity. Instead, Ejiofor called for a total overhaul of Nigeria’s security framework, accountability from leaders entrusted with national safety, and swift justice for the perpetrators.

Extending his condolences to Sommie’s family and colleagues at Arise News, Ejiofor emphasized that Nigeria has lost one of its brightest rising stars.

He insisted that the Federal Government must act decisively to apprehend those responsible, warning that anything less would deepen public mistrust and dishonor the memory of the slain lawyer and broadcaster.
