“Nigeria Facing Unprecedented Insecurity and Shocking Loss of Lives,” Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over U.S. Designation as ‘Country of Particular Concern’

Abuja, Nigeria – November 4, 2025

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the United States government, a status that could lead to possible military intervention if the country fails to urgently address its worsening human rights and security crises.

In a statement signed by him and shared on his official social media handles, Obi said the U.S. pronouncement should serve as a wake-up call to every well-meaning Nigerian, describing the development as a reflection of Nigeria’s grave security collapse under the current administration.

“The recent pronouncement by the U.S. government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” Obi wrote.

Citing data from Amnesty International, Obi highlighted that “over 10,000 people have been killed across Nigeria since May 2023,” pointing to what he called an “unprecedented level of insecurity” marked by rampant killings, abductions, and destruction of property.

He condemned the “unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians”, insisting that the tragic loss of lives was largely avoidable with competent and accountable leadership.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism, and passion on the part of the APC-led government to effectively govern, galvanize, and lead Nigeria,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor called for urgent diplomatic dialogue between Abuja and Washington to prevent any further deterioration of relations between the two democratic allies.

He emphasized that both nations share a long-standing partnership built on regional peace, security, and democratic values, which must not be jeopardized.

“The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose,” Obi concluded.

The U.S. designation, announced last week, follows years of escalating violence and human rights abuses across Nigeria, including attacks on Christians by Fulani terrorists, armed herdsmen, and state security forces.

The move places Nigeria among countries such as Iran, North Korea, and Eritrea, which are also listed for severe violations of religious freedom and human rights.

Political observers say Obi’s statement reflects a growing domestic unease over Nigeria’s deteriorating global image and the mounting calls for the Tinubu administration to take decisive action to restore order and safeguard citizens’ lives.
