NEC Unveils Renewed Hope Plan—A Participatory Roadmap to a $1 Trillion Economy by 2030

Nigeria’s National Economic Council (NEC) endorses a five-year development strategy aimed at consolidating reforms and engaging all stakeholders in delivering a $1 trillion economy under the Nigeria Agenda 2050.

Abuja, Nigeria — August 29, 2025

At its 151st meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the National Economic Council approved the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026–2030). This new framework succeeds the outgoing 2021–2025 plan and is designed to guide Nigeria toward achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030, in alignment with the long-term strategic goals of Nigeria Agenda 2050.

Shettima described the transition to the Renewed Hope Plan as “no ordinary handover,” calling it a “bridge between lessons learnt and ambitions pursued.” He emphasized that this is a practical roadmap rooted in continuity and expanded reforms. According to him, the plan aims to deepen policy consistency and align medium-term strategies with long-term developmental horizons.

Rejecting a top-down approach, the NEC pledged that the plan will be developed through inclusive engagement—meaningful collaboration with state and local governments, private sector, civil society, labour, youth groups, and traditional institutions.

As part of bolstering food security, Shettima announced that NASENI has scaled up solar-powered irrigation pumps, aimed at lowering energy costs for farmers and enabling expanded dry-season cultivation—a move away from reliance on fossil fuels.

NEC also emphasized public health readiness, urging the Accountant-General of the Federation to expedite the release of funds for the impending national polio immunization campaign. The Council affirmed the use of technology to strengthen immunization tracking and surveillance systems.

A successful execution demands funding, multi-level coordination, and resilient governance to translate strategy into tangible results. Most importantly, it will demand the raging insecurity to be fully addressed.
