Hundreds of Mutilated Bodies Found in Abandoned Imo State Mortuary Allegedly Used for Organ Harvesting
Imo State, Nigeria – December 8, 2025
Shock and outrage have gripped Imo State following the discovery of an abandoned mortuary allegedly used for harvesting organs and dumping victims.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed that hundreds of mutilated corpses were found inside the deserted Ugwudu Cottage Hospital Mortuary Services located at Umuechem, Umuhu, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area.
Commissioner of Police Danjuma Aboki, accompanied by journalists, medical experts, and the state Commissioner for Health, arrived at the disturbing scene after an intelligence report exposed the existence of an unregistered facility operating secretly in the area.
According to CP Aboki, the investigation began after the command received actionable intelligence suggesting that an unknown mortuary had been operating without approval.
Acting on the report, the state governor directed the Commissioner for Health to join security officials, while the Inspector General of Police assigned CP Aboki to lead the visit.
“We saw scattered and mutilated corpses in this environment. The corpses we have discovered are over one hundred,” Aboki said, describing the sight as horrifying.
“The owner of the mortuary is currently on the run, despite having received an invitation from the police.”
The Commissioner claimed that police surveillance had been mounted earlier in an effort to apprehend the facility owner, but the suspect escaped. He added that early findings strongly suggest the building was being used to dispose of victims of illegal organ harvesting operations.
He appealed to the public to come forward and identify their missing relatives, stressing that the state government is determined to uncover those behind the gruesome operation.
Despite what seems like lack of evidence, he stressed that the government intends to conduct a mass burial soon, citing the grave health hazard posed by the decomposing bodies.
“This is not a mortuary” – Commissioner for Health
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Egu, confirmed that the structure did not meet any medical or mortuary standards. She reiterated that Governor Hope Uzodinma instructed her to inspect the facility and report back.
“The building is not registered. The corpses are in their hundreds, and there is no evidence that this place was ever operated as a mortuary,” she stated.
“The bodies are not preserved. This entire place constitutes a major public health concern.”
Dr. Egu said her ministry will provide the governor with recommendations on next steps.
Pathologist Confirms Mutilation Consistent with Criminal Activity
A pathologist, Dr. Ibe Ajah, who joined the investigative team, said he was stunned by the condition of the remains.
“These bodies are mutilated. This is shocking. Their condition raises serious suspicion of criminal activity,” Ajah said, reinforcing fears that the site may have been used as a cover for organ trafficking.
Local Authorities: Mass Burial and Demolition Imminent
The Chairman of Ngor Okpala Local Government Area claimed that the facility had long been a subject of suspicion among residents, who repeatedly attempted to report the building’s suspicious operations.
“Anytime from now, we will conduct a mass burial and demolish the building,” he said, confirming that the community wants the structure permanently erased due to its dark history.
A Disturbing Mystery Unfolding
The discovery has triggered calls for a full-scale investigation into organ trafficking rings operating in the region, especially Imo State, with citizens demanding transparency and justice. As the police search for the fleeing proprietor, questions continue to mount:
How long had this operation been running? Who financed it? And how many victims remain unidentified?
The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has long accused the Imo State government, particularly the governor, of enabling, financing, or shielding networks involved in killings and organ harvesting across the state.
Months before the shocking discovery at the abandoned Ugwudu Cottage Hospital Mortuary, IPOB publicly raised alarms about kidnapping syndicates allegedly enjoying government protection to continue their criminal activities unchecked.
Residents of Imo State have echoed similar concerns, lamenting the lack of any serious investigation into prior intelligence reports submitted to authorities.
Many citizens now accuse the government of using the recent media tour of the abandoned facility as an attempt to whitewash its image rather than confront the deeper issues behind the atrocities.
According to locals, the government appears desperate to conduct a mass burial, a move they fear may erase crucial evidence before independent investigators can fully uncover what happened, who operated the facility, and who benefitted from it.
Authorities insist that an investigation is ongoing and that more revelations are expected in the coming days. However, public skepticism remains high, with many residents demanding an independent, transparent inquiry and insisting that the truth must not be buried along with the unidentified victims.
