Government Declares Carter Bridge in Lagos Beyond Repair

Lagos, Nigeria — Thursday, 11 September 2025

The Federal Government, through Works Minister Sen. David Umahi, has officially declared Carter Bridge in Lagos irreparable.

After assessments of its structural integrity above and below water, experts recommended full replacement rather than continued patchwork repairs.

The conclusion comes following repeated structural evaluations showing advanced deterioration of piles, pier caps, and reinforcement caused by neglect, saltwater intrusion, and illegal dredging.

Contractors, including Julius Berger, had earlier worked on surface-level and above-water repairs (handrails, pile-caps above water), but underwater components were found severely compromised.

Experts estimate the cost of repairing the bridge to be more than ₦380 billion, and the more viable solution is to build a brand-new bridge, estimated at about ₦320 — ₦359 billion.

The government is exploring funding options including Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and possibly international finance.

The decision to replace Carter Bridge rather than attempt further repairs reflects not only safety concerns but also cost-effectiveness in the long run.

Experts suggest a new structure could deliver greater longevity and better service to Lagosians than continued repairs on an aging infrastructure nearing the end of its useful life.
