Federal High Court Focuses on Nnamdi Kanu’s Health as Hearing Resumes in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria – September 26, 2025

The legal proceedings involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took a new turn today as the Federal High Court in Abuja concentrated on a pending application addressing his health challenges.

Kanu is currently before Justice James Omotosho for a scheduled hearing that many supporters had expected would feature a ruling on his long-awaited “no-case submission.” Instead, Justice Omotosho announced that the day’s session would center on concerns over Kanu’s deteriorating health. The judge, who said he interrupted his own break to address the matter, referred to the IPOB leader warmly as “my brother Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu arrived at the court in high spirit, where he was welcomed by family members, his legal team, and numerous supporters who came from far and wide to show their solidarity despite restrictions from the government.

Lead defense counsel Onyechie Ikpeazu (SAN) was granted permission to present oral arguments on the application, which seeks proper medical care for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in-line with recommendation of independent physicians.

Supporters and activists provided live updates from the courtroom, describing a tense atmosphere punctuated by calls for justice and the IPOB leader’s unconditional release. By midday, no ruling had been delivered on the health application nor on the “No Case Submission”, leaving the court and observers waiting for further directions.

Thursday’s proceedings reechoes people’s concern over the delay tactics of the Nigerian court as well as the serious concerns over Kanu’s health as he continues to face what IPOB has described as an illegal trial on charges brought by the Nigerian government.
