Congressman Riley Moore Delivers Congressional Report on Nigeria to White House

U.S. Congressman Riley M. Moore has formally delivered the findings of a congressional investigation into religious persecution and insecurity in Nigeria, a probe commissioned by Donald Trump following Nigeria’s redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

In a detailed public statement issued after a meeting at the White House, Moore confirmed that President Trump tasked him with leading the investigation after Nigeria was officially redesignated under the U.S. International Religious Freedom framework. The CPC classification is reserved for countries where violations of religious freedom are deemed systematic, ongoing, and egregious.

“Since President Trump redesignated Nigeria as a CPC and tasked me to lead a Congressional investigation, I have worked diligently with my colleagues to produce the report we presented today,” Moore stated.

According to Moore, the investigation involved bipartisan engagement, congressional hearings, expert testimony, meetings with internally displaced persons, discussions with religious leaders, and direct interaction with senior Nigerian government officials.

He said the resulting report presents a “clear picture of the threat environment in Nigeria” and outlines specific recommendations aimed at imposing accountability measures and countering radical Islamist terrorism. The document also proposes coordinated cooperation between Washington and Abuja to restore security.

Moore publicly thanked key congressional figures for their participation in the probe, including House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, Vice Chair Mario Diaz-Balart, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, and Congressman Chris Smith, describing the effort as comprehensive and collaborative.

The congressman revealed that he traveled to Nigeria as part of a bipartisan delegation and personally witnessed “horrific atrocities Christians face.” He stressed that instability in the country requires decisive action and sustained international engagement.

“Our brothers and sisters in Christ have suffered in silence for too long,” Moore declared, adding that the world is now watching how Nigeria responds to mounting security challenges.

Nigeria’s CPC redesignation has reignited global debate about religious violence and Fulani terrorism in the country. The label places Nigeria among nations under heightened U.S. scrutiny and potentially exposes it to diplomatic pressure, sanctions, or policy consequences if improvements are not recorded.

The redesignation followed years of reports documenting attacks on Christian communities, church bombings, abductions, and mass killings attributed to Fulani terrorist groups operating across Nigeria.

President Trump has previously signaled a hardline posture against terrorist groups responsible for such violence, warning that the United States would not ignore systematic persecution.

Peoples Chronicles had in December reported that the United States, in coordination with the Nigerian government, carried out Christmas day airstrikes against suspected Fulani terrorist groups in Sokoto, Nigeria, marking what observers described as a significant escalation in efforts to curb the killing of Christians in the country.

Posting on his official social media platforms, President Donald Trump stated that the strikes were executed at his direct order as Commander-in-Chief, warning that the era of restraint was over for terrorists targeting Christian communities.

With the congressional report now formally delivered to the White House, the next phase may involve policy decisions shaped by its recommendations. Moore urged the Nigerian government to deepen its relationship with the United States and take concrete steps toward ending violence against Christians and stabilizing affected regions.

The submission of the report marks a significant moment in U.S.–Nigeria relations. It signals that Nigeria’s internal security crisis has moved beyond domestic politics into the arena of international oversight and strategic engagement.

Whether the findings translate into sanctions, enhanced security cooperation, or broader diplomatic measures remains to be seen. What is clear is that Congressman Moore’s investigation has now placed Nigeria’s religious freedom record squarely before the highest levels of the U.S. government.
