BREAKING NEWS | Seven Fulani Suspects Arrested Over Killing of Okada Riders in Rivers Community

The arrests occurred on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, following a coordinated operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilante group OSPAC, and professional hunters.

Omoku, Rivers State (September 18, 2025)

In a significant development, seven Fulanis have been apprehended in connection with the recent killings of commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as “Okada riders,” in Omoku, the administrative headquarters of Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State.

The suspects, identified as Fulani nationals, are currently detained at the Omoku Police Station. Their capture comes after a series of targeted attacks on Okada riders, which had heightened tensions in the community.

The arrest highlights a broader security challenge facing Nigerians, particularly the repeated attacks by Fulani armed groups across the country. From the Northern states to the South, communities have faced kidnappings, killings, and destruction of property.

Many critics argue that the government’s treatment of these perpetrators as negotiable actors rather than the terrorists they are leaving residents vulnerable and fueling a perception that criminals can operate with impunity across the country while ordinary citizens bear the brunt of insecurity.

The operation was conducted under the directives of ONELGA Council Chairman, Sir Dr. Chukwu Ogbogu Shedrack, who had instructed security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the killers to justice. In a show of leadership, Chairman Shedrack accompanied the convoy of security agencies to hand over the suspects to the Police headquarters in Port Harcourt.

During a stopover at Ahoada Police Station, a large crowd of angry residents had gathered, ready to accompany the Chairman in solidarity against the killings. Speaking to the crowd, Chairman Shedrack urged calm and appealed to residents to trust in the legal process, emphasizing that justice will be served while law-abiding citizens continue their daily activities.

The Chairman’s office through a press release seen by Peoples Chronicles noted that the arrests underscore the administration’s commitment to maintaining ONELGA as one of the most peaceful and hospitable local government areas in Rivers State. The press release highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Council Chairman’s office to address security challenges and reassure residents.

This incident underscores ongoing challenges related to security and the rule of law in parts of Rivers State. Authorities have pledged to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate legal proceedings against the suspects to address the grievances of the affected community.

Residents have expressed relief and appreciation for the Council Chairman’s swift action. The press release from the ONELGA Chairman’s media team praised the collaborative effort of security agencies and the local government in restoring a sense of safety among motorcycle operators and the wider community.
