Breaking News: Intersociety Accuses Vatican Secretary of State Parolin of “Doublespeak” on Nigerian Christian Genocide, Demands His Immediate Resignation

Enugu, Nigeria – November 24, 2025

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has issued a blistering statement accusing Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, of enabling a dangerous narrative that downplays the ongoing persecution and the Genocide of Christians in Nigeria.

The human rights organization is now calling for his immediate resignation, warning that continued Vatican ambiguity puts 113 million Nigerian Christians, including 60 million Catholics, as well as the global Christian population of 2.4 billion, at heightened risk.

Vatican Accused of “Doublespeak” and Echoing Nigerian Government Denials

According to Intersociety, the Holy See’s recent statements, beginning around Oct. 21, 2025 have increasingly mirrored the Nigerian government’s long-standing position that “there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria.”

The group states that this shift emerged from within the Office of the Secretary of State, accusing Cardinal Parolin of “sustained attempts to deny or minimize” documented atrocities against Christians.

This misrepresentation, Intersociety says, has created “a grave moral contradiction” within the Vatican an institution historically regarded as a global defender of persecuted Christians.

The organization cited a troubling pattern of inconsistencies, including contradictory public remarks by Catholic leaders between Nov. 17 and Nov. 20, 2025.

These, it argues, have emboldened Nigerian government officials, Islamic extremist groups, and other actors responsible for spreading misinformation about the crisis.

Deadliest Wave Since Chibok: 280 Christians Killed, 623 Abducted in 90 Days

Intersociety disclosed shocking new data covering September to November 2025, which it describes as “worse than the 2014 Chibok abduction.”

Key findings include:

  • 280 Christians killed in 90 days

  • 623 Christians abducted in the same period

  • 388 abducted in five days (Nov 17–21) alone: of which 314 schoolchildren abducted from a Catholic school in Niger State, 12 teachers, including clergy, and 62 other Christians abducted across Kaduna, Kebbi, Kwara, Borno, and Benue States

  • Multiple Christian communities attacked simultaneously

These attacks, Intersociety stressed, were carried out by “political leadership-protected Islamic Fulani Jihadists” and Boko Haram factions operating with near-total impunity.

Thanks to Courageous Clergy And Condemnation for Silent Church Leaders

The group expressed special appreciation to outspoken Catholic and Christian leaders who have refused to stay silent, including bishops from Makurdi, Nsukka, Abakaliki, Wukari, Maiduguri, and Kontagora, as well as pastors and priests across Plateau, Taraba, Enugu, Anambra, and Benue.

But it also delivered a scathing rebuke to influential Church leaders who, in its view, have contributed to a dangerous silence or denial, including diocesan heads in Enugu, Owerri, Onitsha, Abuja, Awka, Ekwulobia, Lagos, Nnewi, Sokoto, Jos, and others.

The Vatican’s Statements “Endangering Lives” – Intersociety

Intersociety argues that by echoing the Nigerian government’s narrative, the Vatican has:

  • Undermined global advocacy

  • Weakened international pressure on Nigeria

  • Confused global Catholic networks

  • Emboldened perpetrators

  • Endangered millions of vulnerable Christians

It further alleges that Cardinal Parolin’s stance has produced “doublespeak and inconsistencies,” especially when contrasted with Pope Leo XIV’s own recognition just days earlier, of Nigeria as a hotspot of severe Christian persecution.

Full Call for Resignation

The organization is demanding:

  • Immediate resignation of Cardinal Pietro Parolin as Vatican Secretary of State

  • Suspension of his title “His Eminence” in all Intersociety publications

  • His removal or reassignment from the Vatican should he refuse to resign

“In a time when Christian survival is at stake, moral clarity is non-negotiable,” the group said.

A Global Warning

The statement concludes with a stark reminder that If global institutions especially the Vatican fail to speak with clarity, the consequences for Christians in Nigeria and worldwide will be catastrophic.
