“As a family, our loss is immeasurable, and words cannot truly capture the pain we feel.”
Ricky Hatton’s Family Release Emotional Statement Following Boxer’s Death Aged 46
Greater Manchester, September 15, 2025
Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton passed away at the age of 46, and his family has issued a heartfelt statement describing their “immeasurable” loss, offering a glimpse into his life beyond the ring and asking for privacy during their mourning.
Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester on Sunday morning. Police have confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
His record: 45 wins, 3 losses in 48 professional bouts. He held multiple world titles across the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions.
Hatton had been open about mental health struggles, including battles with depression, addiction, and attempts at recovery post-retirement.
He was due to make a comeback fight on 2 December 2025, scheduled in Dubai, but passed before that could take place.
In their tribute, released through Greater Manchester Police, Hatton’s family said:
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son Richard.”
They remembered him as more than a champion: as “a loving father, grandfather, and brother, and a true friend to many.”
They highlighted his character: “He had a heart as big as his smile, and his kindness, humour and loyalty touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him.”
“To the wider world, Richard will always be remembered as one of boxing’s greatest champions – a man who gave everything inside the ring and wore his heart on his sleeve outside of it.”
They also said that although the titles, fights, and roar of the crowd are remembered, Hatton “remained the same down-to-earth Richard who never forgot where he came from.”
Expressing their grief, the family said:
“As a family, our loss is immeasurable, and words cannot truly capture the pain we feel. Yet in the midst of our grief, we have been deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of love and support.”
They requested privacy as they come to terms with life without him, and said that his memory will “forever remain in our hearts, in the hearts of his fans, and in the sport he loved so dearly.”
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world and beyond. Fellow boxers, celebrities, and fans have expressed shock and sorrow.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said Hatton was “much loved by so many in Greater Manchester” and pledged the city would find a proper way to honor his legacy.
His openness about mental health has been particularly recalled, with many lamenting the loss of someone who had become an advocate for people struggling behind the scenes.
