Sheikh Gumi Warns Nigeria Military Against Provoking Terrorists in Katsina State

Abuja, Nigeria (September 21, 2025)

Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, a prominent cleric known for negotiating for Fulani terrorists, has warned the Nigerian military and other security agencies against actions that could undermine the alleged peace deals reached with the terrorists in Katsina State.

Sheikh Gumi, who was recently deported from Saudi Arabia as a security threat and barred from performing the Hajj pilgrimage in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, pressed Nigerian authorities to support the reconciliation efforts with Fulani terrorists to take root, warning that any attempt by security forces to engage the hardened Fulani terrorists risk plunging communities back into violence.

Gumi’s announcement came in the wake of a plea for peace by the traditional rulers and community leaders in Faskari Local Government Area. In attendance were several wanted terrorist leaders, including Ado Alero, a wanted kingpin. The Fulani terrorist kingpin stated that he increased his attack on various communities and armed forces after operatives of the state’s security agency arrested one of his members.

The terrorists who attended the meeting were visibly armed with sophisticated weapons. They also used the opportunity to raise grievances over the arrest of their member despite their relationship with the local and state authorities, insisting that such actions breed mistrust and could quickly trigger more devastating attacks.

Gumi negotiating on behalf of Fulani terrorists argued that terrorists who say they are ready to embrace peace should not be antagonized. When peace agreements are reached, they must be respected and supported. Any provocation from security agencies will only derail the process and push these groups back into the forests for more attacks, he said.

The cleric also called for fairness and justice, stressing that the wrongs committed against civilians by security forces should not be overlooked.

The intervention underscores the fragile nature of dialogue-based peace efforts in with terrorists in Nigeria, where cycles of violence and failed truces have left residents wary and hopeless.

While Gumi’s approach has attracted support mostly from Fulani bandits and the Nigerian government, it has been widely criticized by Nigerians who are massacred daily and left at the mercy of terrorists, particularly when they are unable to meet the peace demands running into hundreds of millions.

Gumi’s latest warning also highlights the precarious balance between military operations and community-driven reconciliation initiatives with terrorists.
