IPOB Delegates Join Catalonia’s La Diada Celebration, Pledge Ongoing Solidarity
From Barcelona to Biafra: Massive Global IPOB Turnout Underscores Worldwide Support for Self-Determination
Barcelona, Spain, (September 12, 2025)
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) marked a significant diplomatic moment on Thursday as its members joined thousands of Catalans to celebrate La Diada, the National Day of Catalonia.
The annual holiday commemorates the 1714 Siege of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession, when Catalonia lost its autonomy to Spanish forces. Far from being a day of defeat, La Diada has evolved into a powerful expression of Catalan identity and independence aspirations—a resonance not lost on the visiting Biafran delegation.
IPOB members arrived from across Europe and beyond, turning heads with their vibrant display of Biafran culture and solidarity. Despite the absence of IPOB’s Head of the Directorate of State (HDOS), Mazi Chika Edoziem, who was bereaved, the group was led by Deputy HDOS Mazi Tony Nzurumike, Deputy European Representative Mazi Isaiah Ubah, and the National Secretary of IPOB Spain Mazi Eze NwaChukwu.
Together, the leadership exchanged greetings and posed for photographs with Catalan organizers, underscoring what Nzurumike called “an unprecedented moment of friendship and shared resilience.”
Speaking at the event, Mazi Tony Nzurumike drew parallels between Catalonia’s centuries-long quest for self-determination and Biafra’s struggle for independence. “This is a signal by the Catalonians that their effort for self-determination is sacrosanct and remains untouchable, and they are going to continue until they are completely free,” he said.
While noting that Catalonia enjoys a level of autonomy, “they are much more far away from our kind of plight because they enjoy autonomy, they enjoy their own policing, they enjoy freedom of speech… they are only short of a borderline called independence.” Nzurumike praised the Catalans’ unwavering spirit and thanked them for supporting IPOB’s cause.
The centerpiece of IPOB’s participation was a striking Biafran masquerade, which captivated crowds along the streets of Barcelona and during the official gathering, symbolizing the pride and cultural identity of the Biafran people.
Broadcast live on Biafra TV to a global audience, the celebration served as both a cultural showcase and a reminder of IPOB’s commitment to building international alliances in its pursuit of self-determination.
