Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Resigns Shortly After Securing $550b U.S. Investment Deal

Tokyo – September 7, 2025

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has formally announced his resignation, in a development reported by Japanese state broadcaster NHK and confirmed by multiple domestic news outlets. The decision comes amid political turbulence following recent electoral setbacks and just two days after Ishiba finalized a historic $550 billion investment pledge with the United States.

Japanese media outlets attribute Ishiba’s resignation to mounting internal pressure within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) after its coalition lost its majority in both parliamentary houses. Facing growing calls for change.

NHK, the national public broadcaster, confirmed the resignation and noted that Ishiba made the decision ahead of a scheduled internal party vote a move seen as an attempt to manage the immediate fallout from the election.
