Boko Haram Massacres 63 in Darajamal, Borno State
Bama, Borno State – September 6, 2025:
At least 63 people, including five soldiers, were killed in a brutal overnight attack by Boko Haram insurgents on the newly resettled community of Darajamal in Bama Local Government Area, northeastern Nigeria.
The assault began around 9 p.m. on Friday, September 5, when the militants stormed the rural community, opening fire indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze. According to Modu Gujja, the area council chairman, at least 24 houses were destroyed during the attack. The violence continued through the night, with many residents and travellers caught in the crossfire.
Darajamal had been a stronghold for Boko Haram insurgents for over a decade and remained deserted for years, even after the military recaptured it in ruins. On July 13, the Borno State government resettled more than 3,000 displaced persons from an IDP camp in Bama town into 300 newly constructed housing units in the community. The recent attack has shattered fragile hopes of stability and has led to a fresh displacement of about 108 households, according to Gujja.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, who visited the community on Saturday, September 6, confirmed the death toll and the displacement figures. Standing before the remaining traumatized residents, he described the incident as “very sad” and a “major setback” for resettlement efforts. The governor appealed to the residents to remain in the community, assuring them of increased security measures.
The attack reveals the persistent insecurity in Nigeria, especially in the Northern region where Boko Haram and other groups continue to target vulnerable communities with ease, hindering efforts to rebuild and resettle displaced populations.
