PDP Governors Warn Nigeria Is Sliding Into Dictatorship

In an Eid-el-Maulud statement, opposition governors caution that insecurity, economic failure, and judicial compromise are signs of creeping authoritarianism.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, extended Eid greetings to Muslims nationwide. The occasion, however, was also used to issue a stern warning about Nigeria’s political trajectory. The governors argued that the country is “sliding into full-blown dictatorship,” citing an expanding disconnect between citizens and government services, rising insecurity, economic hardship, and a judiciary under pressure.

The forum highlighted how leadership failures have left Nigerians disconnected from basic social, economic, and security protections. The governors drew parallels between the ethical principles of Prophet Muhammad — peace, justice, compassion, and service — and contemporary governance, pointing out that the state has moved away from these ideals. They called for immediate corrective measures to restore accountability, transparency, and citizen trust in public institutions.

This warning echoes earlier critiques from PDP leaders and civil society. Prominent PDP figure Dele Momodu recently lamented a drift toward “civilian dictatorship,” while international observers, including the Associated Press, have raised concerns about shrinking political space and increasing executive overreach. The governors’ statement reinforces these concerns and underscores the opposition’s commitment to holding government accountable.

The use of the term “sliding into dictatorship” by state governors is highly significant. It signals alarm from within Nigeria’s political elite and brings public attention to the erosion of democratic norms. Analysts note that such statements may influence civic discourse, increase public scrutiny of executive actions, and shape debates ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP governors concluded by urging a return to principles of governance grounded in humility, accountability, and service to the people. They emphasized that maintaining democracy requires active participation and vigilance from both leaders and citizens. The statement serves as both a festive message and a political call to action, blending cultural reflection with civic concern.
