Jonathan Critiques Nigerian Politics at Ogiadomhe’s 70th Birthday
Edo State, Nigeria – September 5, 2025
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep concerns about the state of Nigerian politics, describing it as fraught with betrayal and dishonesty. He made the remarks during the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and ex-Deputy Governor of Edo State, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, in Benin City.
Speaking at the event, Jonathan said, “Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals.” He reflected on his experience during the 2015 presidential election, highlighting the prevalence of duplicity and self-interest among politicians. He praised Oghiadomhe as a rare example of loyalty and integrity, describing him as someone who could be trusted implicitly.
Several prominent figures attended the celebration, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Osarhiemen Osunbor, and Adams Oshiomhole.
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, representing Governor Monday Okpebholo, commended Oghiadomhe for his foundational work in Edo State and emphasized that his legacy continues to influence the state’s governance.
Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion echoed the praise, noting that he trusted Oghiadomhe to manage the state’s affairs during his absence abroad.
Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole also paid tribute to Oghiadomhe, emphasizing his unwavering loyalty to Jonathan. He stated, “Wherever Jonathan is, that is where Mike will always be.” Oshiomhole’s remarks underscore the deep trust and camaraderie between the two, highlighting Oghiadomhe’s reputation as a steadfast ally in Nigerian politics.
The celebration of Chief Mike Oghiadomhe’s 70th birthday not only honored his personal and professional contributions but also served as a reflection on the challenges within Nigerian politics. Jonathan’s candid remarks on betrayal and dishonesty contrasted with the tributes from Edo State leaders, which celebrated loyalty and integrity as essential values for public service.
