Washington, Aug. 26, 2025 — Facing criticism over his expanded use of federal power, President Donald Trump firmly denied accusations of authoritarian overreach, stating, “I’m not a dictator. I’m a man with great common sense.” His remarks come amid escalating tension over National Guard deployments and federal takeovers of local law enforcement.
Speaking at a White House event on Monday, Trump addressed mounting backlash over his aggressive tactics. “They say, ‘We don’t need him. Freedom, freedom. He’s a dictator,’” he said, responding to detractors. “A lot of people are saying maybe we like a dictator. I don’t like a dictator.” He emphasized his self-image as practical and intelligent, not authoritarian.
Earlier this month, Trump mobilized armed National Guard units to patrol Washington, D.C., effectively assuming control of local policing. Critics argue that this marks an alarming expansion of federal authority into traditionally local jurisdictions.
Trump also hinted at deploying troops to other high-crime cities, including Chicago. His comments have provoked fierce opposition from local leaders who viewed the move as a politically motivated, unconstitutional escalation.
