Seven Killed, Eight Injured in Southern Kaduna Attack Despite Peace Pact

The Irigwe Development Association confirmed that the assailants struck late Sunday, August 24, leaving many victims with gunshot wounds and machete cuts.

Southern Kaduna, Aug. 25, 2025 — Armed men allegedly identified as Fulani militants launched a deadly attack on the Angwan Rimi community in Kamaru Ward, Kauru LGA, Southern Kaduna, killing seven people—mostly minors—and injuring eight in the early hours of Monday.

The Irigwe Development Association confirmed that the assailants struck late Sunday, August 24, leaving many victims with gunshot wounds and machete cuts. Those who lost their lives include Jacob Zaka (12), Magret Mathias (5), Delight Paul (1), Sati Markus (9), Confidence Yakubu (15), Veronica Paul (25), Matthew Sunday (14), and Felicia Francis (15).

Eight others—Mathew Sunday (14), Jethro Istifanus (7), Jackson Istifanus (5), Emmanuel Morris (14), Agatha Sylvester (9), Joy Markus (9), Devine Paul (1), and Mary Ishaya (12)—were reported critically injured and receiving treatment.

The association condemned the violent act and urged federal, state, and local authorities to strengthen protection efforts and restore safety to the affected communities. They also appealed for calm as the region mourns.

The assault comes despite the implementation of the “Kaduna Model”—a government-led peace initiative that delivered disarmament, reintegration, and rural development in collaboration with former bandit leaders such as Yellow Jambros and Dogo Gide. Approximately 200 militants reportedly surrendered under the program.

While the initiative has lifted some roads and encouraged displaced villagers to return home, critics—including Christian groups and stakeholders—have questioned its transparency and the absence of victims in the negotiation process. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani defended the strategy, calling it a “carrot-and-stick” approach to peace and security.
