IPOB Directs Global Family to Stage Worldwide Rallies for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Bremen, Germany – November 13, 2025

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a directive to all its members in the diaspora to commence coordinated rallies across various countries, demanding the immediate release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a memo signed by Mazi Chika Edoziem, the Head of the Directorate of State (DOS) of IPOB, the movement called on its global family units to “put machineries in place” and organize peaceful demonstrations in their respective countries of residence to highlight the “continued illegal detention” of Kanu by Nigeria’s DSS for over four years.

The memo, dated November 12, 2025, stated that the demand for Kanu’s freedom is grounded in the principle of self-determination, which it described as “a recognised and guaranteed human right for Indigenous Peoples all over the world.”

“Our demand for his immediate release is anchored on the fact that agitation for self-determination is not a crime but a right. This right extends to the Biafran people for whom Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was championing their right to self-determination before he was kidnapped in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria in flagrant contravention of international rules regulating extradition of persons,” the memo read in part.

The movement condemned what it called the “selective application of the rules” by the Nigerian State, saying that Kanu’s ongoing detention despite multiple court rulings in his favor reflects the government’s disregard for both domestic and international legal standards.

According to the Directorate of State, the new directive marks the beginning of a “series of global actions” that will be carried out to intensify pressure on Nigerian authorities and international bodies to secure Kanu’s freedom.

“This memo kick-starts a series of actions to be undertaken by the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra to demand an end to the selective application of rules by the Nigerian State against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and against the Biafran people in general,” it added.

Kanu, the leader of IPOB, was abducted in Kenya in June 2021 and forcibly returned to Nigeria, an act the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has since condemned as a violation of international law.

Despite a Court of Appeal judgment in 2022 discharging and acquitting him of all charges, he has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The IPOB leader, had last month openly challenged the Abuja Federal High Court to cite the specific law under which he is being prosecuted, arguing that his ongoing trial lacks legal foundation and is in clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution.

Despite his insistence, the presiding judge, Justice Omotosho, reportedly failed to clarify which valid law criminalizes the alleged offences. Instead, he attempted unsuccessfully to persuade Kanu to enter a plea, a move that has drawn widespread criticism from legal observers and rights advocates.

Kanu who is representing himself has since filed a fresh motion seeking the court to strike out the charges against him, citing that the alleged offences are anchored on repealed laws and unconstitutional provisions that no longer exist within Nigeria’s legal framework.

He maintains that the prosecution’s reliance on void statutes not only invalidates the case but also underscores a deliberate attempt to perpetuate an illegal detention.

Meanwhile, tension deepened when reports emerged that Kanu narrowly survived an attempt on his life inside the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred just hours after his sister warned of a plot linked to the Presidency to eliminate him in custody.

Sources within the DSS confirmed that the attack was carried out by an operative, sparking outrage among supporters and human rights groups who now demand an independent investigation into what they describe as an “assassination attempt under state supervision.”

This series of developments has further intensified calls for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, with critics accusing Justice Omotosho of presiding over “a politically engineered persecution cloaked in the guise of law.”

IPOB’s latest memo signals renewed international mobilization by the movement’s diaspora chapters as they prepare for a wave of demonstrations calling attention to the political persecution of a freedom advocate.
