Sowore Ignites Global Online Uprising for Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom

Supporters Flood Social Media with Calls for Justice as #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Trends Worldwide

Abuja, Nigeria – October 14, 2025

Prominent human rights activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has launched the online phase of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement, a coordinated digital campaign demanding the immediate release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a powerful message shared on his verified social media handle, Sowore declared the internet a new “rally ground for freedom and conscience,” urging activists, citizens, and allies worldwide to transform every online platform into a hub of resistance and truth.

According to Sowore, the aim is to keep the demand for justice alive and visible every single day until the Nigerian government ends what he described as the “unjust and unlawful incarceration” of Kanu.

The announcement has sparked a wave of online solidarity, with Nigerians and international supporters flooding social media with messages of outrage, empathy, and determination. The hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow is currently trending, underscoring the growing global impatience over Kanu’s prolonged detention despite court rulings ordering his release.

Among those responding were voices from across the country, expressing frustration over perceived double standards in Nigeria’s justice system and the suppression of lawful dissent.

Chiukwujioke_Proudly Anioma (@chiukwujioke) lamented the irony of insecurity and selective justice, tweeting:

“Meanwhile, terrorists can move freely with guns, but a man has been on trial for 4–5 years now.”

Another user, #WeCannotContinueLikeThis (@Suo_rez), directed his message to the Nigerian presidency, writing:

“#FreeNnamdiKanuNow #MNKOct20 @officialABAT hear the truth from the streets. You cannot build something on nothing. The government must uphold citizens’ rights and must be seen to be fair and just in the treatment of all citizens.”

Echoing similar concerns, Ojo Adeshina (@electronics_boi) described Kanu’s detention as an assault on Nigeria’s democracy:

“The unlawful detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not just an attack on one man — it’s an assault on justice, freedom, and the rule of law in Nigeria. Every day he remains behind bars is a reminder of how far we are from true democracy. Silence is complicity. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow #MNKOct20.”

These online reactions reflect a broader mood of discontent and civic awakening, as many Nigerians see Kanu’s case as symbolic of the erosion of constitutional rights, selective justice, and the deepening trust deficit between citizens and the state.

With the digital campaign now underway, attention turns to October 20, when citizens plan to march physically to Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, a date that could mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability in Nigeria.
