
Enugu Police Officers Flee as Kidnappers Block Major Highway

On the evening of October 10, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred along the Ugwuogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka Road in Enugu State, Nigeria.
A group of kidnappers reportedly blocked the busy highway, causing widespread panic among travelers. Eyewitnesses captured the chaos in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
The footage, shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user identified as Chuks, shows several vehicles halted on the highway as travelers express their fear and confusion.
The narrator in the video states, “Happening now, life, life, kidnappers. We are stuck here because of kidnappers. Kidnappers. God help your people.” The incident reportedly led to a complete standstill on the road, which connects Nsukka city to several northern communities in the state.
According to reports, police officers stationed along the route fled the scene in response to the threat posed by the kidnappers. The situation escalated until the Nigerian Army intervened, arriving at the scene to restore order
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and travelers. Many have taken to social media to express their disbelief and frustration. One commenter questioned, “How can police run when civilians run?” highlighting the perceived failure of law enforcement to protect citizens. Others have criticized the government’s handling of security in the region, calling for more decisive action to address the growing threat of kidnapping along major highways in Enugu State.
This event underscores the ongoing security challenges in Enugu State, where kidnappers have been known to target travelers along major highways. In the past, drivers have protested the incessant abductions by blocking highways, urging the government and security agencies to take more decisive action.
