Breaking: ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Gives FG 14 Days to Meet Demands

Abuja, Nigeria – September 30, 2025

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, threatening a nationwide strike if its demands are not met.

This announcement follows a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, disclosed that the union’s demands remain largely unaddressed, warning that failure by the government to act within the given period would trigger a fresh industrial action. Key issues highlighted by the union include:

  • Full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.

  • Adequate funding and revitalization of public universities.
  • Payment of outstanding salary arrears and promotion arrears.

  • Settlement of third-party deductions.

  • Addressing harassment and victimization of staff in select universities.

  • Overall improvement in the welfare of university lecturers.

The union stated that if no meaningful response is received within the 14-day window, it would commence with a two-week warning strike, potentially escalating to an indefinite nationwide strike.

ASUU has urged parents, students, and other stakeholders to pressure the government to resolve the issues promptly.

This move intensifies the ongoing tension between ASUU and the Federal Government, with students across the country facing uncertainty over the stability of the academic calendar.
